Hampta Pass approach through Kullu Valley meadows

Kullu to Spiti in five days.

Five days through one of the most dramatic environmental shifts in Himachal. The green forests of Kullu give way to Spiti's high cold desert — and it happens in a single afternoon crossing. The approach is gentle. The world on the other side is not.

Day by Day

Drive from Manali to Jobri, then a short afternoon walk through dense birch and pine along the Rani Nallah stream. Chikka is where the forest opens and the valley walls close in — the mountains begin to feel present.

Forest Walk Afternoon Trek

A gradual climb through widening meadows with the Hampta glacier visible above. The Kullu side is green and cold in the mornings. Balu Ka Ghera is an open camp — no village, no noise, just the glacier ahead and the pass above it.

Meadow Climb Glacier Views

The crossing. Kullu to Spiti — green to desert — in a single afternoon. The pass arrives quickly; the landscape on the far side is immediate and total. By the time you reach Shea Goru, you're in a different world entirely.

Summit Day World Crossing

The last trekking day follows the Chandra River through the lunar plateau of Lahaul. Everything is drier, more exposed, higher-feeling. The mountains are the same scale — but the air between them is different now.

River Valley Desert Landscape

The trek ends at Chatru. Those with an extra day drive on to Chandratal Lake at 4,350m — a glacial lake worth the detour. Otherwise, back to Manali. Most people find themselves looking up routes home on the drive out.
