Pin Bhaba Pass approach through Bhaba Valley, Kinnaur

Kinnaur to Spiti in one crossing.

Six days from the apple orchards of Kinnaur to the cold-desert plateau of Spiti. At 4,900m, Pin Bhaba is the highest crossing in our schedule and among the least-trodden. The approach is long. Summit day begins before dawn. The valley on the other side makes it worth every hour of it.

Day by Day

Eleven kilometres through the lower Bhaba Valley, forest thinning as the altitude climbs. By the time the treeline ends, the surrounding peaks have settled in at a scale you don't fully expect on Day 1. Mulling is where the valley opens wide.

Valley Walk Long Approach

A shorter, well-paced day. The glacier appears for the first time from camp at Kara — far above but clearly visible. The route ahead is readable. The altitude gains in increments, and the body accepts it without drama.

Glacier Views Steady Climb

High-alpine terrain from here — rock, scree, no tree cover. Phutsirang has a base-camp quality: quiet, cold, exposed. The pass is above. The ascent begins at 3am tomorrow. Most people sleep earlier than usual.

High Alpine Final Approach

The day starts in darkness. Boulders, scree, snow, and silence for the first hours. The pass at 4,900m connects Kinnaur to Spiti — green river valley on one side, pink cold-desert on the other. The descent to Bwaldar is long and stays with you.

Summit Day Pre-dawn Start

Seventeen kilometres through the Pin Valley — the longest day on the trek, but the terrain is steady and the scenery pulls you forward. Mudh at the end: stone walls, flat roofs, the dry and particular scent of Spiti.

Desert Walk Pin Valley

Last morning in Pin Valley before the drive out through Spiti. The crossing is behind you. Most people find themselves measuring every subsequent trek against this one for a long time after.

Trek End Spiti Morning
